About Dr. Negar Partow

2003 -2011

March 2003 to August 2011

Victoria University of Wellington

Serving as Course Coordinator and Lecturer from March 2003 to August 2011 at the School of Art History, Classics, and Religious Studies, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, marked a significant chapter in my academic journey. Rising from a teaching fellow to this role within two years of commencing my master’s degree, I undertook the responsibility of lecturing in both undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

My focus encompassed exploring the intricate dynamics between religion and politics in the Middle East, delving into the region’s political environment and history, deciphering its ethnic and religious maps, and examining contemporary political philosophies. In this capacity, I facilitated the academic development of up to two hundred students, contributing to the vibrant intellectual environment at Victoria University of Wellington.

2004 – 2019

New Zealand Defense Force

Command and Staff College (NZDF–CSC) – From December 2004 to 2019, my engagement with the NZDF–CSC has been marked by a dynamic and impactful role. Over this period, I have delivered lectures and crafted courses, particularly in International Security Studies for senior NZDF staff since 2011. My responsibilities extended to coordinating postgraduate studies, providing essential pre-deployment briefings, and offering ongoing academic support to the NZDF headquarters.

Additionally, I have co-edited two influential books, one focused on UN peacekeeping missions and the other examining the role of liberal democracies like New Zealand on the United Nations Security Council during their non-permanent membership.

As a dedicated member of Women in International Security, I collaborated with the NZDF in reviewing the role of women in NZDF in conflict environments, contributing to the ongoing development of strategies and policies.

2011-2018
Royal Brunei Armed Forces

Command and Staff College (RBAF–CSC) – Spanning from December 2011 to 2018, my engagement with the RBAF–CSC encapsulates a rich array of responsibilities. For six years, from 2011 to 2017, I held the pivotal role of coordinator for the core paper in the Master of International Security program offered by Massey University in Brunei for the Royal Brunei Armed Forces.

This comprehensive course covered theories of International Security, the security landscape of Southeast Asia, Islam and politics in the region, and the prospective democracy in ASEAN. As the senior teaching staff representing Massey University, I collaborated closely with both institutions to elevate academic capabilities and enhance the program’s rigor.

The positive outcomes of my efforts were underscored by my last teaching evaluation from Brunei, a testament to the success achieved in advancing academic excellence within their college.

2011- onwards

Senior Lecturer, Massey University, Wellington, New Zealand

As a Senior Lecturer at Massey University in Wellington, New Zealand, since December 2011, I have played a multifaceted role within the Centre for Defense and Security Studies. My responsibilities span coordinating and instructing both undergraduate and postgraduate courses, with a focus on the philosophy of security, human security, and the Middle East security environment.

In addition to providing pedagogical support for faculty and postgraduate students, my current activities involve course coordination, lecturing, and fostering collaborative engagements with government agencies and stakeholders.

I have served as the course coordinator and lecturer for various courses and have been an advisor to the New Zealand Defence Force on Middle East affairs since 2003.

Notably, I co-edited a highly anticipated book on United Nations Peacekeeping Missions in 2015, and another book on the role of New Zealand is currently underway.

2015- onwards

United Nations Security Council

In 2015, I co-edited a highly anticipated volume focusing on United Nations Peacekeeping Missions, followed by another influential publication in 2020, delving into New Zealand’s role on the United Nations Security Council.

Serving as one of the editors for the prestigious New Zealand Journal of Security Studies, I actively contribute to shaping conversations in the field. Additionally, my commitment extends to serving as a diligent reviewer for Middle East publications in New Zealand.

Throughout my academic journey, I have provided mentorship and guidance, overseeing numerous postgraduate research projects, master’s theses, and PhD dissertations, embodying a dedication to academic excellence and research development.
